How to start motocross racing in India
Motocross is racing on a closed dirt track with jumps, berms and ruts. In India the sport has grown from a handful of tracks to events across the country, but the first step for most riders is the same: get regular track time, get the right gear, and enter a race in a category that matches your bike and your skill. This guide walks through that path, using Motofy Fest Speed Orion Cup in Jaipur as a concrete example of what entering a race looks like.
1. Pick the right category
Races are split by engine size and experience so that you line up against riders like you. A typical Indian event separates kids' classes, novices, experienced Indian-bike riders and imported (“foreign”) bikes. At Speed Orion Cup the motocross categories are Kids MX 65–125cc, Indian Novice 150–260cc, Indian Open 160–450cc (Indian motorcycles only), Indian Expert 150–260cc, Foreign Open and Adventure 350–500cc. If it is your first race, enter the novice class even if you feel fast — racing in a pack is a different skill from riding alone.
2. Safety gear is not optional
Every serious event checks your gear before you ride. Expect to need a full-face helmet, a riding jacket or chest protector, gloves, motocross boots and knee and elbow guards. Buy the helmet and boots first; they protect the injuries that end seasons.
3. Train on a real track
Most of the speed in motocross comes from technique: standing body position, clutch control on loose dirt, carrying momentum through berms and landing jumps cleanly. All of it is learned with repetition on dirt. In Jaipur, Motofy Arena runs training every Sunday, 6–10 AM, including one-to-one coaching.
4. Prepare the bike
Before any race the organisers inspect every vehicle. Check brakes, chain, tyres and that nothing is loose. A reliable, well-set-up bike beats a more powerful one that breaks on lap two.
5. Enter your first race
Registration usually means an online form, an entry fee per category and proof of identity. For Speed Orion Cup: entries close 29 October 2026, the fee is ₹5,000 per motocross category, payment is by UPI, and the motocross day is 26 January 2027 at Motofy Arena, Jaipur. Register here.
6. Get noticed by sponsors
Results matter, but so does visibility. At Speed Orion Cup the rider auction cum sponsorship (15–20 November 2026) lets brands back individual riders before race day.
