Suspension Preload Adjustment for Dirt Racing in India

Suspension Preload Adjustment for Dirt Racing in India

Most dirt riders blame their bike when they get bounced around in whoops or bottom out on landings. The real problem is often simpler: suspension preload that has never been set for their body weight.

Preload is the initial compression of your suspension springs before you even sit on the bike. Set it wrong and your dirt bike will either pack down too much in corners or stay so stiff that every rock and rut sends a jolt through your arms. At Motofy Fest, where dirt tracks throw everything from deep sand to hardpack berms at you, dialled suspension makes the difference between fighting your machine and flowing with it.

Start by measuring static sag. Have a friend hold the bike upright while you stand beside it in full gear. Measure from the rear axle to a fixed point on the fender or side panel. Write that number down. Now climb on in your normal standing position on the pegs, settle your weight, then step off carefully. Measure again. The difference is your laden sag. For motocross and dirt track racing, you want 95 to 105 millimetres at the rear. Too little sag means your spring is too stiff or preload is wound too tight. Too much means the opposite.

Adjust preload by turning the collar at the top of your shock with a spanner. A few turns can change how your bike handles ruts, absorbs jump landings, and keeps traction on broken dirt. Front forks need attention too: 30 to 40 millimetres of sag keeps your front end planted through corners without diving hard under brakes.

Once sag is right, test it. Ride a lap, hit a berm, take a small jump. If the bike feels balanced and the wheels track the ground, you have it. If it still feels harsh or wallowy, recheck your numbers before touching clickers.

Motofy Fest runs 24, 25 and 26 January 2027 at Motofy Arena, Jagatpura, Jaipur. Motocross, dirt track, ATV racing, 4x4 autocross by day, live concert and DJ night after dark.
